I woke up early in the morning, and my daughter was still in asleep. After three hours and two hundred miles drive, I was on the slope again. I skipped the last ski season so I had seen any snow for two years. It was great to go skiing again. It was a weekday, so everything was nice. No crowds. No line to wait. I only wished the snow could be better. It is a dry winter here in North California. We do not get much snow this season yet. The snow was firm but some groomed trails was decent.
I stayed mostly on the groomed trails. I started about 9:50 am and had a few runs on blue trails to warm myself up. After my hamburger lunch, I tried a few black diamond run which would be a lot more fun if the snow was better.
The mountain was quite and beautiful. This trip was probably the first time I saw Lake Tahoe from Alpine Meadows. Previous few trips to Alpine Meadows were cloudy and windy, but the snow was really awesome. Yesterday was a different day. It was a nice sunny day and it was more like a spring day than a winter day although it was still in January.
Since it was a weekday, I did not have to wait inline for getting on a lift. I was just skiing down and getting on lift again and again with only a few short lunch and water breaks in between. At the end, my upper leg muscles started to cramp and it forced me to take some sport drink to continue. After that, I decided to stay just in blue runs to enjoy the mountains and the snow in a relax way.
On the way back, there was a traffic jam around Sacramento, so I stopped by a Frys to see what newest electronics toy in the market. Well, I did not find a lot of exciting stuffs there. Anyway, I got home by 8:20 pm and I felt that the life was nice again.
關於滑雪的二三事

2005 年的前兩週，北加州來了好幾個『暴風雨』(Storm)。雖說這裡的氣象報的是 Storm，中譯『暴風雨』或是『暴風雪』，其實在很多地方只是比較大的雨再加上稍大的風罷了。對於在颱風天下長大的人，很難真的稱作『暴風雨』吧！不過在還是難免在低窪的地區帶來些水災就是了。但在山上，就會帶來皚皚的白雪。對於在北加州滑雪的人，過完了聖誕節就是期待這些新落下來的雪。很多人甚至是不畏艱難，即便是在大雪茫茫，風雪漂泊的狀況下，也要開著車上著雪鍊一路開上滑雪場去感受難得的雪粉(註一)經驗。雖然現在因為要滑雪路途遙遠，不像當年在西雅圖學滑雪時那麼瘋狂，也在 Joy 的慫恿下，連接著兩個星期衝上滑雪道，去享受滑在雪粉上的快感。
上上週末去的是一個叫大熊谷 ( Bear Valley ) 的地方，這是一個比較小的滑雪場，然而，因為風雪太大，到 Lake Tahoe 其他滑雪場的路大多封閉，而且我們也只打算滑個半天的雪，到小小的便宜滑雪場比較划算。開上山的時候，在山路上還在下雪，我們開的是一般的轎車，所以要上雪鍊，雖說以往有過不少上雪鍊開車的經驗，不過路面是白的，路旁的雪牆也是白的，甚麼都是白的，即便慢慢開地開車，還是很有挑戰的。開了大半天終於到的滑雪場，不過也是一樣，甚麼都白茫茫的，這時候就得靠雙腳的萬能，光憑腳感來滑也是不錯的練習。雖說風大到快要可以往上坡滑了，能在軟綿綿，一拍一抖就掉的雪粉上滑帶來的那種獨特的感覺也吸引了不少我們一樣瘋狂的人上山了。
暴風雪過後總是有好天氣的，這時候山路上就會被一堆衝上山的人塞的滿滿的，然後同樣的一堆人又會到滑雪道的纜車下排排站，就是為了同時享受山上好天氣的美景與腳底下百摔不痛的新雪。昨天也和大家去湊這個熱鬧。星期六的時候，先開車到山腳下的汽車旅館住了一晚，這樣就不用一大早四五點就得起床，還可以早到滑雪場，不用搶停車位。
滑雪滑了好幾年了，除了試過一次 telemark ski (註二)，一直都是滑的 downhill ski。前天心血來潮，租了一對短短的，看起來很可愛的 skiboard，也有人叫做 ski blade。 現代的 Downhill ski 是所謂的 shaped ski，也就是說 ski 的兩邊是有弧度的。早期的 downhill ski 受到製作技術的限制，ski 是又長又直，通常比參高度多上二三十公分。雖然看起來很好看，但如果你穿那麼長的 ski 站在雪道上，會是件可怕的事。Ski 越長，在高速進行的時候越穩定，但也越難轉彎，跌倒的時候也會更容易受傷。現代 ski 的弧度，有效的減少 ski 的長度，通常大概跟身高差不多，讓轉彎時便得更容易控制。Skiboard 則是短到極致，約 80 到 110 公分，比 snowboard 還短。當然，這樣就要犧牲高速下的穩定性。雖然在比中等陡峭稍緩的坡上，滑 skiboard 不容易像 downhill ski 一般的享受自信的快速奔馳帶來的快感，但在樹林裡，moguls 上，需要作迅速的轉彎時，短短的 skiboard 靈活的特性的確可以讓人『如履平地』，讓平常讓人懼怕的坡度或地形，變成 piece of cake。
上午用 skiboard，下午換回來自己的 ski，差點不會滑了，又花了好一陣子去適應 ski。雖說 ski 的好幾年，技術算還可以，在雪況好的時候，也敢滑上雙黑鑽（註三) 的坡道衝衝，但以後可能會更常滑 skiboard。因為 玩 skiboard 是比玩 ski 輕鬆多了，也許還可以練練 ski 做不到的一些花招。現在在山上，看到用 skiboard 還不是很多，不過我想 skiboard 易學的特性，應該也會很快的變得普遍吧。
(註一) Powder，指雪的狀況成粉狀，柔軟且乾燥。在 powder 上那種平順，寂靜地滑雪的感覺，是是滑雪者夢寐以求的禪境。
(註二）一般來說，常見的有三種不同的 ski，downhill ski 和 crosscountry ski 是最常見的，再來是 telemark ski。Downhill ski 顧名思義就是設計用來向下衝的 ski，但在平地上走卻很痛苦。在平地上滑要用 Crosscontry ski。Telemark ski 則有點像是 downhill ski 與 crosscountry 的混血。
(註三) 米國滑學場坡道的分級從簡單到最難是用顏色及形狀來標示，依次是，綠圈，藍方，黑鑽，雙黑鑽。
